Solanum vespertilio ssp. vespertilio (Tenerife Nightshade)
120 (200)cm, Tenerife Nightshade is a most ornamental woody shrub native of open spots in rocky soils in the upper succulent zone of Tenerife, where it has become rather rare. Makes silvery-gray barked branches and mid green, broad ovoid leaves, all covered with strong spines. Its' large, bright purplish blue flowers are born in pendulous racemes and followed by most decorative, bright orange fruits (poisonous!). For any rich, well drained, rocky soil. Sunny to partially shaded spot in summer, keep drier and sunnier in winter at min. 10°C. Ideal for the slightly heated greenhouse or wintergarden. IX-XII.
