It is native of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera, and La Palma growing in rock crevices on north-facing mountain slopes in the pine-tree zone at an elevation of some 1.000m through 1.900m. Populations from Greenovia described from La Palma belong either to a subspecies or the closely related Greenovia diplocycla. Greenovia aurea has rather large, creamy yellow flowers in May to June/July. Greenovia aurea can easily be propagated either by offsets or seeds.
