It is similar to the species from Tenerife, yet this subspecies has a broader, somewhat ovoid, light rose red to pale bluish rose inflorescence of up to 300cm in height. It is native of the Northwestern side of the outer mountain range of la Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma, where it grows at an altitude of some 1.950m to almost 2.400m. It thrives in any pure inorganic soil (e.g. crushed lava) and should be carefully watered, especially in winter. It requires the sunniest position throughout and a minimum of some 10°C in winter. It temporarily endures slight freezing down to -4°C if the inner rosette is sheltered from rain. A somewhat delicate plant for the connoisseur ! An excellent plant for a frostfree greenhouse or cool wintergarden. USDA Climate Zone 8/9.
