15 (25)cm, Real Majoran is from the Mediterranean and a strongly aromatic species widely used in the Mediterranean cuisine. It grows as a binanual to short lived semiperennial and has oval, finely pubescent (= hairy) leaves and terminal cylindrical clusters with small rose white flowers. Ideal as a perennial pot plant for any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Reduce watering in winter and keep plants at a minimum of some 5°C. In milder regions plant in the open garden in a sunny spot in any rocky soil with some protection from winter dampness. In a suitable position this species will readily self-sow, flowering in late summer the same year. In colder climates it should be grown as an annual with direct sowing in late spring.
