Silene vulgaris ssp. aetnensis (Mount Etna Catchfly)

20 (40)cm, Mount Etna Catchfly is a herbaceous perennial species from rocky sunny spots on Sicily (Italy). It has glabrous, glaucous leaves and white flowers surrounded by an inflated calyx. Fresh leaves and young shoots of all Silene vulgaris subspecies are edible and have been historically used either fresh in saldas or cooked as a vegetable in the Mediterranean region. Nowadays only on Cyprus leaves are still collected in larger amounts and locally sold, and usually added to omlets or served as a cooked vegetable. For any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. V-VI.
