It is native in the north-eastern Mediterranean region (France, Balkan to Greece and Rhodes) from partially shaded, humus filled rock crevices. For any humus rich, yet very well drained soil in a protected, sunny spot. Better under cold glass as leaves are delicate to low freezing. USDA Climate Zone 8/9. II-IV.
