Hibiscus heterophyllus (Queensland Rosella Hibiscus)

250 (450)cm, Queensland Rosella Hibiscus is one of the giant perennial Hibiscus species and simply impressive. It is native of New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. Hibiscus heterophyllus has semi-woody prickly stems, irregularly lobed to unlobed leaves covered with short hairs and showy, very large either yellow or pale pink (our seed stock) flowers with a dark red inner eye. For any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter carefully water plants and keep them at a minimum of some 15°C. Several vendors (even some in Australia) falsely offer seeds from Hibiscus sabdariffa under the name of Hibiscus heterophyllus. Seed capsules in true Hibiscus heterophyllus never have any reddish tinge, nor are they succulent, but they will change from green to light beige-brown upon maturity. Also, true and almost tree-like Hibiscus heterophyllus exceeds by far the size of its more shrubby cousin Hibiscus sabdariffa. We offer seeds from the true species. VII-IX.
