It is native of rich, moist soils in meadows and woods, and at borders of ponds and streams from Florida to Texas, north to New Brunswick (USA), Quebec, and Ontario (Canada). For any humus rich, preferably slightly moist soil in a sunny to partially shaded position. Will readily self-sow under good conditions. VII-IX.
