Aeonium smithii (Smith's Giant Houseleek)

20 (40)cm, Smith's Giant Houseleek is a very local species native to vertical, sun-exposed rock walls in the upper region in the southern and south-western part of Tenerife. It is frost-resistant down to -5°C at night in habitat during winter, however it is not winter hardy in Europe, unless it is cultivated in an unheated green-house, providing shelter from excessive humidity. A very unusual species with a broad and highly succulent, caudex-like stem, slightly undulated, fleshy and finely pubescent leaves. Bright yellow flowers are produced in terminal racemes. This species requires extra drainage and careful watering, and is best grown in pure grit sand or lava. V-VII.
