Ranunculus (Macaronesian Buttercup)

Macaronesian Buttercups are tall growing perennials with large, acer-like leaves and beautiful, brilliant golden-yellow flower cups on a tall stem in summer. Plants go dormant in summer and rest the hot season as bulbous rhizomes. With decreasing temperatures in autumn the new leaves unfold.
Sow flat on any humus-rich soil at some 20°C throughout the year. Keep pots always slightly moist from beneath. Place seedlings during summer in a partially shaded and during winter in sunny spot at a minimum of some 10°C.

Ranunculus cortusifolius ssp. major (Madeira Buttercup)

100 (150)cm, Madeira Buttercup is a perennial with large, fresh green, acer-like leaves and large, brilliant yellow flower cups on a tall stem. This subspecies is slightly larger in all parts than subspecies cortusifolius from the Canary islands. It is native of rich, rather moist soils in the laurel forest on Madeira (Portugal). For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Plants go dormant in summer, then keep the succulent bulbous rhizomes drier until new leaves emerge in late autumn to mid winter. Winter minimum some 10°C. V-VII.
