Helleborus (Hellebore)

Hellebores are long-lived, herbaceous perennials from meadows, woods and rock crevices of the northern hemisphere. They make broad, finge-like, usually leathery leaves and beautiful, quite large, green, white or purple flowers in early spring before the leaves unfold. Easily cultivated in any humus rich, well drained soil in a partially shaded to sunny spot.
Sow seeds flat in any humus rich, well drained, sandy soil. Keep pots in a sunny, protected spot outside. All species require a cooling period of several months prior to germination. If seeds are sowed late in the year, they germinate in spring in the following year. Carefully transplant seedlings to the final spot in the garden from mid summer to early autumn or as soon as plants are strong enough. Once transplanted leave plants undisturbed so that they develop their whole beauty with time.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
