Adansonia (Bao-Bab Tree) & Ceiba (Silk Floss Tree)

Bao-Bab Trees or Baobabs belong to a small genus with only some 6 species in Madagascar, one species in continental Africa and one species in Australia. Silk Floss Trees or Ceibas are closely related species from tropical areas in the Americas. Baobabs and Ceibas are most ornamental evergreen to deciduous trees with mostly broad and massive trunks and short and flat crowns, especially in Adansonia species. Adansonia digitata is the only species with showy white flowers on older specimens, whereas Ceiba speciosa has numerous large rose flowers before new leaves emerge. All are easily grown in large pots or containers in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep plants almost completely dry, when the will shed most leaves and keep at a minimum of some 15°C.
Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained substrate at some 25°C throughout the year.

Ceiba speciosa (Silk Floss Tree)

5 (20)m, Silk Floss Tree (syn. Chorisia speciosa) is an ornamental deciduous species from central and northern South America. It makes a broad, greyish-green stem with prominent large flat spines, and an open crown with numerous large rose flowers before new leaves emerge in late spring. After flowering, large capsules are formed which contain cotton like white hairs, embedding the brownish-black seeds. An excellent bonsai plant for any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep almost completely dry and at a minimum of some 15°C. V-VI.
