Lardizabala (Zabala Fruit)

Zabala Fruit belongs to a small genus with two species from South America. They are evergreen vines from woods with leathery, dark green, slightly glossy leaves, and pendulous racemes of brownish-black flowers followed by egg-shaped, edible fruits. Lardizabala biternata is self-sterile, i.e. two different plants are necessary for pollination. For any humus rich, well drained soil in a protected and sunny spot. Plants require a climbing aid and need a very good winter protection (i.e. plastic airfoil around the vines and a thick dry mulch layer at the base). This species is not winter hardy in Central Europe. In cold areas grow under frostfree conditions in pots throughout the year. Keep plants drier in winter a minimum of some 5°C.
Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained soil and keep pots outside in a protected spot from mid spring to mid autumn. In winter store pots in a frostfree spot at some 15°C to 20°C. Seeds require a prolonged cooling (yet without frost!) period prior to germination. The germination process in this species is naturally very slow and may well take 6 to 18 months.
All are USDA Climate Zone 8/9.
