Canna

Canna is a small genus from southern USA to Souzth America. They have mostly annual foliage which emerges from perennial, fleshy, usually winter dormant rhizomes. They are strong and fast growers for any rich, leafy and slightly moist soil. All are very ornamental due to their large, banana-like foliage and clusters of funnel-shaped flowers in summer. Wild species naturally make smaller and more elegant flowers. Taxonomy in this genus is a complete mess and there are uncountable invalid names as well as hybrids which are traded as species and vice-versa. Even large companies specialized in Cannas show an astonishing amount of wrongly identified plants. We try our best to keep botanical names and identification as accurate as possible, however we cannot give any guarantee. What we do guarantee is that you will receive seeds of exactly the plants as shown in our photos! Additionally, seed grown Cannas are free from the Canna Yellow Streak Virus (CaYSV). CaYSV is a devastating viral infection which showed up in the early 21st century, and which has been spread by some commercial growers of Canna hybrids and cultivars throughout most of the world.
Prior to sowing scarify seed (e.g. carefully scratch the seed coat with fine sandpaper) and soak them in luke warm water for some 48h. Sow at a minimum of some 20°C in any rich soil. Will start to flower the second year. In most species rhizomes can be unpotted in autumn as soon as foliage has started to yellow. Store rhizomes in a dry, cool and frostfree spot until the end of spring. The tallest species, such as Canna altensteinii and Canna tuerckheimii, are best grown as evergreens at a winter minimum of some 15°C, for their shoots will usually need 4 to 6 months to start flowering.

Canna altensteinii (Altenstein's Giant Canna)

Canna altensteinii (Altenstein's Giant Canna)

200 (280)cm, Altenstein's Giant Canna is an ornamental and very tall species with large leaves and terminal racemes with orange flowers. By some authors it is regarded a member of the Canna indica complex, however, Canna altensteinii is clearly distinct. It grows much taller in all aspects and its overall habit is more similar to Türckheim's Giant Canna (Canna tuerckheimii), whereas seeds are significantly larger than in Canna indica. Easily grown in humus rich soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep plants at a minimum of some 15°C and reduce watering to a minimum. At lower temperatures plants will go dormant and the rootstock will stay dormant during the cold season. Real Canna altensteinii is rarely offered in the garden trade and what is sold as such is mostly an orange flowering form from Canna indica. Our seeds are from true-to-type plants. VII-X.

Canna flaccida (Golden Canna)

Canna flaccida (Golden Canna)

150cm, Golden Canna or Bandanna of the Everglades is native in wetlands from south-eastern to south-central USA. It makes broad lanceloate, yellowish-green leaves and showy, rather large, pale yellow and lightly perfumed flowers which open in the evening and fade away around noon the following day. It is the most widely used parent in large-flowered hybrid cannas. However, the pure species is rarely known in cultivation. Canna flaccida is easily cultivated in any humus rich, always moist soil in a sunny spot during summer. In winter keep the dormant, fleshy rhizomes rather dry in a cool, yet frost free spot. Several companies falsely offer seeds from Canna indica var. flava under the name of Canna flaccida. We provide seeds from the true species. VI-VIII.

Canna glauca (Yellow Water Canna)

Canna glauca (Yellow Water Canna)

180cm, Yellow Water Canna is native of wetlands and marshes in subtropical regions of the Americas. It makes ornamental bluish-green leaves and pale to rich yellow flowers, sometimes with a small orange red throat. Canna glauca is easily cultivated in any humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot during summer. In winter keep the dormant, fleshy rhizomes in a cool, yet frost free spot. What is usually sold as Canna glauca in the garden trade, are indeed yellow flowered forms of Canna indica or hybrids. We offer seeds from the true species. We have two different forms available: one from Florida, USA with narrow and rich yellow petals, and a second one from Yucatán, Mexico with broad and pale yellow petals. Additionally, plants from Mexico tend to grow somewhat taller and have slightly larger seeds. V-VIII.
