Lobelia (Tree Lobelia)

Tree Lobelia are unique shrub to treelike, evergreen plants in the broad genus Lobelia with usually small herbaceous perennials. The tree-like species are native of high-altitude meadows and open spots in cool mountain cloud forests in SC Africa (Uganda and Rwanda) and make in their first years a dense basal rosette of lance-shaped, silvery-grey foliage. With maturity they build up a very tall and long lasting inflorescence with uncountable funnel-shaped flowers. For any humus rich, very well drained, slightly sandy soil in partial shade (summer) to full sun (winter). Protect the hairy leaves from rain. Keep pots drier in winter at a minimum of some 10°C.
Sow the fine seeds flat on any humus-rich, well drained, preferably slightly sandy soil in a sunny spot at some 20°C. Do not cover seeds with soil and always water from beneath. Keep soil always slightly moist.
