Scilla (Macaronesian Blue Bell)

Macaronesian Blue Bells are beautiful, easily grown bulbous plants, native of the Canary Islands and Madeira. They prefer a sunny position in any well drained soil with sufficient watering when plants are in green. In winter keep plants in full sun at a minimum of some 10°C. Keep bulbs completely dry with yellowing of leaves, which is usually by the end of spring to mid summer.
Sow Canary Scilla species at 10°C to 20°C under protected glass from early autumn to late spring, seeds will only germinate in autumn and winter, regardless date of sowing. Keep always frostfree at a minimum of some 10°C in a sunny spot with regular watering.

40 (60)cm, Madeira Blue Bell is a rare and threatened, very tall and large Scilla native of Madeira (Portugal). It produces severals, up to 10 cm broad leaves with a nice reddish edge, from a very large bulb, which may gain 10 cm and more in diameter. The racemes reach up to 60 cm in height and have numerous small pale lilac flowers followed by fleshy dark green fruits maturing to yellow. A not winter hardy species which requires a minimum of some 5°C in winter in a sunny spot and careful watering. Summer dormant. Seeds are always extremely scarce. XI-III.

20cm, Ibiza Blue Bell is a summer dormant and winter green species from Ibiza (Balearics, Spain) and North Africa with numerous graceful rose flowers in late summer above fresh green, glossy basal leaves. For any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot. In winter keep plants slightly drier in full sun and frostfree at a minimum of some 5°C. VIII-IX.
