Blue Lotus, Sacred Blue Lily and Water Lilies belong to a genus of hardy to subtropical and tropical aquatic plants with a cosmopolitan distribution. Most species make tubers or thick rhizomes from which emerge floating glossy leaves and floating colorful flowers. Smaller tropical species are easily grown in large pots or small containers filled with 1/2 soil and 1/2 water. Tropical species require a minimum of some 20°C throughout the year and full sun and are showy plants which are excellent in a heated greenhouse or wintergarden.
Sow fine seeds on top of any humus rich soil, carefully add some 5cm of water on top of the soil. Keep pots at a minimum of some 20°C in full sun. The first leaves are tiny and will gradually get larger. Carefully transplant tubers to larger pots as seedlings get larger. Plants are very fast growing and will make their first flowers within 1 to 2 years after sowing! Until sowing keep seeds always moist in order to prevent them from dessication.
