Henbane, Insane Root, or Hog’s-Bean is a small genus with fast growing annuals or biennials native of semi-arid or coastal areas from Central Europe, and the Mediterranean extending eastwards to Asia. They make short, few branching stems with greyish-green to fresh-green, hairy leaves and terminal racemes with white, lemon yellow to intense yellow flowers, usually with a purple to almost black throat. Plants have been used in medicine, all parts are strongly poisenous if ingested. Easily cultivated in a rich, very well-drained, preferably sandy or rocky soil in full sun.
Sow flat on any rich, yet well drained, sandy soil in late spring. Keep pots in full and substrate always slightly moist until seedlings appear. Transplant to the garden from end of spring till early summer as soon as plants are strong enough.
