Rubus (Blackberry and Raspberry)

Blackberries and Raspberries belong to a complex genus of more than 250 species native from temperate to subtropical regions. Several Rubus species make edible berries in terminal clusters on annual to perennial prickly stems with compound leaves. Fruits are eaten fresh or prepared as jam, jelly, syrup, or wine. They are rich in vitamins (A, B and C). The dried leaves are used in teas for their medicinal properties. All species are easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot.
Sow seeds flat in any humus rich, sandy soil. Keep pots in a sheltered, partially shaded spot outside. Transplant as soon as plants are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.

200 (300)cm, Japanese Wineberry is native of open spots in woods throughout Korea, China, and Japan. It makes biannual to semiperennial stems with yellowish-green green leaves which are silvery white underneath. Fruits mature to dark wine red and have a delicious, sweet aromatic taste with a slighly sour flavor. For any humus rich soil in a partially shaded spot. An experimental artificial cross with common blackberry species may result in utmost interesting new combinations, such as plants with valuable, most tasty fruits. V-VII.
