Opuntia (Winter Hardy Fig Cactus), Maihuenia & Miqueliopuntia

Winter Hardy Fig Cactus and the related Maihuenia and Miquelopuntia are native of North and South America and have beautiful silky shiny flowers in early summer in dense tufts with time. They are easily grown in any good soil. Add plenty of grid sand or crushed lava to enhance drainage. Plant in full sun and water regularly from April to mid September, keep plants completely dry from October to March. Give some protective shelter from winter rain and wetness.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.

In early summer it develops most ornamental, rich lilac to magenta flowers followed by yellow fruits. It is native in arid parts of southern North America. For any rich, very well drained, rocky soil in a protected spot in full sun. Excellent for the rock garden with shelter from winter wetness. USDA Climate Zone 6. VI-VIII.
