Monarda or Horsemint are Sage like annuals or woody perennials with usually aromatic foliage and numerous funnel-shaped flowers in dense spikes throughout the summer until autumn. They are fast growing plants, excellent in any rocky and humus rich soil in a sunny spot in the open garden.
Sow flat in a well drained soil in full sun at 20°C. Transplant to the open garden after last frosts in late spring. Make excellent summer pot plants as well.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7/8 unless stated differently.

Monarda fistulosa (Wild Bergamot)
100 (150)cm, Wild Bergamot is a tall perennial with erect stems and a single terminal, dense cluster of bright pink tubular flowers attracting bees and butterflies. The long, lance shaped, toothed leaves are very aromatic and may be used in teas. Native of prairies, fields and open spot in woods in north-eastern USA. Monarda pectinata (Spotted Horsemint)
40 (90)cm, Spotted Horsemint is a herbaceous, sometimes semi-woody perennial with an erect stem with opposite, hairy, lance shaped leaves with an oregano-like aromatic smell, and a terminal raceme with densely packed, small rose to lavender flowers. The leaves have antibacterial and antifungal properties and are used in the preparation of teas. Native of sunny spots in meadows in North America (Vermont to Minnesota, south to Florida, and E Texas and Mexico). For any rich, very well drained, preferably slightly rocky or sandy soil in full sun. III-VII.
