Strelitzia (Bird-of-Paradise)

The genus of Bird-of-Paradise is made up of only two to three species native to South Africa. All are excellent, easily grown container plants with attractive fan-like foliage and spectacular, long-lasting flowers. For any rich, well drained soil. Keep plants drier and sunny in winter at a minimum of some 10°C.
Prior to sowing scarify seeds (e.g. carefully scratch the seed coat with fine sandpaper) and soak them in luke warm water for some 48h. Sow at a minimum of some 20°C in any rich, well drained soil in full sun. Seeds may need time to germinate. Seedlings are quite fast growing and may reach flowering size in 3 years for Strelitzia reginae.
