The genus of Bird-of-Paradise is made up of only two to three species native to South Africa. All are excellent, easily grown container plants with attractive fan-like foliage and spectacular, long-lasting flowers. For any rich, well drained soil. Prior to sowing scarify seeds (e.g. carefully scratch the seed coat with fine sandpaper) and soak them in luke warm water for some 48h. Seedlings are quite fast growing and may reach flowering size in 3 years for Strelitzia reginae.
