The evergreen, winter hardy Yucca offered here are easily raised from seed. They are native of summer hot and winter cold arid regions from N America to the highlands in Mexico, and are trunk-forming, treelike shrubs with a broad terminal rosette, from which emerges on adult plants a very large, pyramidal inflorescence with numerous, usually white, cream white to greenish-white pendulous, bell-like flowers. All are fully hardy in Central Europe, provided that they are planted in a protected position in full sun in the rock garden or a similar surrounding. Alternatively they can be grown successfully as container plants, moved to a cold greenhouse or unheated wintergarden during winter. Seedlings should be kept frostfree in the first two years with reduced watering in winter. All Yucca grow in any rocky, well drained soil.
Sow flat in any soil in full sun at some 20°C in a sunny spot throughout the year. Transplant young plants to the open garden after two years. Especially young plants require protection from moisture in winter. Very easy and robust solitary plants for a sunny spot in the rock garden and very long-lived.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7 unless stated differently.
