"Rosas del Monte" (Mountain Roses) as they are called by the Canary inhabitants are close relatives of Aeonium within the family of Crassulaceae. Some 4 species are known. All have ornamental, dense rosettes of succulent, bluish-green leaves. The sulfur-yellow, quite large flowers are set in late spring to early summer in a short-stemmed raceme. The rare Greenovia aizoon differs in its' blackish-green, pubescent leaves in a miniature rosette. All Greenovia naturally occur in rock crevices in the drier zones of Gran Canaria and all Western Islands and are easily cultivated in any rich, well drained, slightly stony soil in a sunny spot. They require a sunny spot in winter with careful watering as the main growing season is from autumn to late spring. Sow dust-like seeds flat on any well drained soil, keep soil slightly moist from beneath. Do not cover seeds with soil.

Greenovia aurea (Canary Golden Mountain Rose)
20 (25)cm ø, Canary Golden Mountain Rose is probably the most frequently cultivated species within this genus and besides Greenovia diplocycla it is the largest Greenovia, gaining up to 25cm in diameter which in combination with its bluish and glaucous leaves makes it for sure one of the most attractive as well ! It is native of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera, and La Palma growing in rock crevices on north-facing mountain slopes in the pine-tree zone at an elevation of some 1.000m through 1.900m. Populations from Greenovia described from La Palma belong either to a subspecies or the closely related Greenovia diplocycla. Greenovia aurea has rather large, creamy yellow flowers in May to June/July. Greenovia aurea can easily be propagated either by offsets or seeds. IV-VI.

Greenovia diplocycla
10 (20)cm ø, native to La Palma, El Hierro and la Gomera, sharing similar habitats as Greenovia aurea, yet growing in more open locations in the lower zone of the pine-tree forest. It is very similar to Greenovia aurea, yet even larger, and hardly to distinguish from the latter if not flowering. In general its' rosettes are slightly smaller - with exeption of populations in the northwestern parts of the Caldera de Taburiente (Barranco de Izcagua), where plants may gain up to 25cm in diameter. Rosettes are usually some 10cm to 20cm ø, light yellowish green in full sun and finely white powered, if plants are grown in full sun. During their summer dormancy rosettes will close cup-like and are covered with beige-red, dry leaf sheaths. The flowers are even larger than those in Greenovia aurea. Young leaves are ciliated at their edges (magnifying glasses). Plants will never form any offsets, so that propagation is only possible either by seeds or by leaf cuttings, of which the latter is rather difficult and not recommended for beginners. Originally from La Palma, Northwestern side (Barranco de Izcagua) and southern side (Barranco de Las Angustias) of the Caldera del Taburiente (650m), respectively La Gomera in the vicinity of Roque Agando and in the Barranco de Guarimar. Greenovia diplocycla is botanically a very diverse species with several forms and possible some varieties, so that further scientific work is required on their taxonomical status. IV-VI.

Greenovia diplocycla var. gigantea var. nov. ined. Exclusive
30 (40) ø, an impressively large, only recently in 2001 by Malkmus-Hussein, B. recognized new variety. It is native to north-facing, partially shaded rocks in the northern and central parts of La Gomera. In contrast to the species, this variety is much larger in all parts. Its very large rosette of light green leaves is finely powdered with white wax and may gain up to 40cm in diameter. In contrast to Greenovia diplocycla its dormant rosette forms a perfect ball, covered in almost pure white dried leaf sheaths in summer - an utmost beautiful aspect! Its extraordinarily large inflorescence gains up to 30cm in height (!) and consists of up to 250 bright yellow single flowers from April through May/June. It occurs in only few and rather small restricted populations, e.g. in the North of La Cañada Grande, 470m and at the base of Roque de Agando, 1050m. IV-VI.
