Pterocephalus (Winter Hardy Species)

Winter Hardy Pterocephalus are perennials native of temperate regions from Europe through eastern Asia where they usually occur in mountainous areas. They make dense basal leaf rosettes and showy flowers in lilac to rose shades on short to very long filigree stalks. All Pterocephalus species are easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Dwarf and cushion forming species are excellent rock garden plants.
Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained soil and keep pots outside in a protected spot. Seeds require a prolonged cooling period prior to germination in late spring. Carefully transplant young plants to the final spot in the garden as soon as they are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7.
