Urginea (Canary Sea Onion)

Canary Sea Onion, the Canary counterpart to the Mediterranean Sea Onion (Urginea maritima), makes large bulbs and broad leaves up to 80cm in length. Endemic of rocky spots in full sun on Tenerife only. Winter-green and summer dormant species for a sunny spot in the cold, frostfree greenhouse or wintergarden in any rich, well drained, rocky soil. Makes a tall inflorescence with white blooms at the of summer before its' new leaves emerge.
Sow flat at some 15°C to a maximum of some 25°C throughout the year in any well drained, rather inorganic, rocky soil in full sun, especially in winter.

80 (140)cm, native of rocky places on Tenerife, growing in full sun. Makes tall flowering stalks with white star-flowers at the end of summer before the large, wintergreen leaves emerge. Keep bulbs completely dry during the summer as soon as leaves start to wither end of spring. VIII-IX.
