Canary Shrub Scabiosa are perennial, woody, evergreen, low shrubs with corn-flower like blooms in usually rose to purplish colors, similar to those of Cheirolophus (see above), yet they belong to a different family, the Dipsacaceae. All make excellent pot plants or may be planted freely in the slightly heated alpine house or wintergarden. For any well drained, rather rocky soil in an always sunny spot, keep frostfree in winter at minimum 10°C.
Sow seeds flat in any humus rich, well drained, yet slightly moist soil at 15°C to 20°C. Keep seedlings very sunny in their first winter.

Pterocephalus lasiospermus Exclusive
30 (80)cm, subalpine member endemic to the Cañada depression on Tenerife at some 2000m. A freely branching, woody shrub, with short, ovoid to lanceolate leaves and numerous bright pink flowers. For any rocky, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Ideal for the unheated alpine house or cold wintergarden. Might be tried in the open garden in a protected, sunny spot with shelter from rain. Pterocephalus multiflorus ssp. multiflorus Exclusive
30cm, a Cyprus endemic for rocky open sites in mountainous areas. It is an evergreen small shrub with a woody base and numerous pale pink flowers. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Excellent in a protected spot in the rock garden. V-VI.

Pterocephalus porphyranthus Exclusive
30 (50)cm, a very rare subalpine species from the Caldera mountain range on La Palma growing at some 1.900m. Makes a short, woody shrub with grayish green, elongated leaves and bright lilac flowers.
