Salvia (Canary Islands' Sage)

Canary Sage are naturally growing as slightly woody perennials with an usually nice silvery greenish-yellow foliage. Make excellent pot plants in any rich, well drained soil in s sunny spot during summer. Easy in a very sunny position in winter, then keep frostfree with reduced watering at a minimum of some 10°C.
Sow flat in any well drained soil at some 20°C throughout the year. Keep soil always slightly moist and place pots in a sunny spot.

150 (200)cm, Canary Sage is a tall, semi-woody, perennial shrub from medium altitudes on the western Canary islands and Gran Canaria. It makes several bright rose (pure white in the Tenerife form) flowers, which are embedded in beautifully contrasting, dark lilac red pseudo petals. The pale bluish green leaves are densely covered with white hairs in the common form, in the form from western and northern Gran Canaria the leaves are not pubescent and plain fresh green. An easily cultivated species, which may be grown as an perennial in pots or as a fast growing annual. Sow under glass in early spring and transplant to the garden after the last freezing nights in late spring to early summer. VI-IX.

Temporarily frost resistant if root-stock is being well-covered in winter, will emerge again in late spring. 70 (120)cm, Cretean Sage is a beautiful, rarely seen perennial sage species with a woody base, quite large leaves and showy white, rose and lilac flower heads. The strongly aromatic leaves are used for the preparation of herbal teas (Phaskomelo) in Greece. For any rich, well drained soil in a sunny and protected spot outside. In colder regions preferably grow as a pot plant under frostfree conditions with reduced watering in winter and a minimum of some 5°C. VI-VIII.

150 (350)cm, a tall, evergreen woody, strongly aromatic shrub from Somalia with viscid leaves and long terminal racemes with rich sky blue flowers.
