Myrtus (Myrtle)

Myrtle is a most ornamental woody Mediterranean shrub with leathery, dark green, glossy, oval, aromatic fragrant leaves and terminal clusters with white to rose flowers followed by decorative, edible, blue berries in autumn and winter. It is easily grown as a container plant in any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot. During winter keep plants cool, yet frostfree in full sun with reduced watering. In warmer regions (Mediterranean and Atlantic area) plants can be grown in a sheltered place outside in the garden.
Sow small seeds flat in any rich, well drained substrate in a sunny spot at some 20°C to 30°C. Keep soil always slightly moist, yet not wet. As soon as seedlings appear place pots in a sunny spot.
All are USDA Climate Zone 9.

120 (180)cm, White Fruited Myrtle is a rarely found pure white fruited form from the common blue fruited myrtle. Sometimes it is listed as Myrtus communis var. leucocarpa which is not a recognized variety though. It has leathery, uniquely fragrant, dark green, glossy, oval leaves and terminal clusters of white to rose flowers. The decorative, white fruits are edible and have a pleasantly aromatic, yet bitter taste and might be used in small amounts in fruit salads. An easily grown container plant for any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep plants cooler with reduced watering at a minimum of some 5°C. In warmer regions (e. g. the Rhine valley or coastal areas) it may be grown outside in a sheltered spot in the garden with some winter protection. Wild collected seeds from a single, entirely white fruiting population in Western Cyprus. VII-IX.
