Hibiscus (Hardy Mallow)

Hardy Mallows or hardy Hibiscus are mostly growing as perennial, woody shrubs. All require a well drained soil in full sun and plenty of water in summer, so that they make their flowers in profusion all summer long.
Sow flat preferably in spring at some 20°C in any rocky or sandy soil, keep pots always sunny. Transplant seedlings as soon as they are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6/7.

180 (240)cm, Scarlet Rose Mallow or Scarlet Hibiscus is an utmost beautiful, yet still rarely cultivated perennial herbaceous shrub from wet areas in Southern USA (Georgia, and Alabama to Cntral Florida). It makes tall annual stalks with very large, brilliant scarlet red flowers above palmately-divided leaves. The latter as well as its stems are nicely red tinged. As in the related Swamp Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos) the stalks die back in winter and re-sprout in following spring. For any very humus rich, always slightly moist soil in full sun. During winter stop watering and preferably cover the dormant rootstock with a mulch-layer to give some additional protection from freezing through. VII-IX.

150 (200)cm, Hardy Rose Mallow is similar in appearance to the Swamp Mallow Rose (Hibiscus moscheutos), yet the light pink flowers are more trumpet shaped and show a darker inner blotch. It is native of wetlands and moist woods in North America. For any always slightly moist, humus rich soil in full sun. Plants die back in autumn and go dormant during winter. During winter stop watering and preferably cover the dormant rootstock with a mulch-layer to give some additional protection from freezing through. The rootstock makes new shoots by mid spring.
