Ilex or Hollies are evergreen shrubs to small trees with brilliant, dark green foliage with usually serrated margins and most decorative bright red to purplish-red berries on older plants. Fruiting branches are widely used in Christmas decoration. Easily cultivated foliage plants for any rich, well drained soil with sufficient moisture in partial shade.
The two Canary Holly species grow in between or just below the zone of the laurel forest and are typical plants in this unique ecosystem. Keep plants grown in containers drier in winter in full sun at a minimum of some 5°C.
The European Holly is fully winter hardy in the open garden in Central Europe and may be planted to a partially shaded to sunny spot.
Sow seeds of Canary Hollies flat in any humus rich, well drained soil in partial shade at some 10°C to a maximum of soem 20°C, as higher temperatures will slow down or even inhibit germination. Plants grow rather slowly and thus will stay manageable for many years.
Sow seeds of the European Hollies flat in any rich, well drained soil. Keep pots in a protected spot outside during winter and transplant seedlings in late summer.
