Swamp Mallows from the Malvaceae family are shrubs with a perennial rootstock from moist spots in bogs in northern America. They require plenty of water in summer and are best cultivated in shallow water at the edge of a pond, where they will unfold willingly their large, tropical flowers from mid summer through early autumn.
Sow flat in spring at some 20°C in any humus rich, moist soil in a sunny spot. Transplant as soon as seedlings are strong enough. Give dormant rootstock in winter some protection from freezing through (e.g. mulch layer).
All are USDA Climate Zone 7.

Hibiscus militaris (Hardy Rose Mallow)
150 (200)cm, Hardy Rose Mallow is similar in appearance to the Swamp Mallow Rose (Hibiscus moscheutos), yet the light pink flowers are more trumpet shaped and show a darker inner blotch. It is native of wetlands and moist woods in North America. For any always slightly moist, humus rich soil in full sun. Plants die back in autumn and go dormant during winter. During winter stop watering and preferably cover the dormant rootstock with a mulch-layer to give some additional protection from freezing through. The rootstock makes new shoots by mid spring. In contrast to the closely related Hibiscus moscheutos it has several, showy rich pink flower cups. It is native of marshes and alongside wetlands in the USA.
