Urginea (Sea Onion)

Sea Onion, with very large bulbs and broad leaves up to 80cm in length. From sandy and rocky places in the Mediterranean. Usually winter-growing species for a sunny and protected place outside in milder almost frostfree climates or in pots under cold-glass. Urginea is supposedly not hardy enough in Central Europe to be planted outside in the open garden.
Sow flat at a minimum of some 10°C from autumn to spring in any well drained, rather sandy soil in a sunny spot. Frostfree pre-cultivation in pots for at least two years.
All are USDA Climate Zone 10.

120 (180)cm, Sea Onion is native throughout the Mediterranean region where it occurs in cliffs, dry hills and sandy spots. Make tall flower stalks with hundreds of small white flowers and blackish green anthers, bulbs become quite massive with time. Seed from a wild collection in coastal areas of western Mallorca, Spain (Son Bunyola) at some 150m and Northwestern Sardinia (50m). VIII-IX.

30 (50)cm, Undulated Sea Onion (syn. Drimia undulata) is a rarely cultivated and utmost beautiful dwarf wintergreen species with a showy, basal rosette of strongly undulated leaves and a filigree spike with pale rose flowers. It is native of North Africa and scattered on some Mediterranean islands. For any rich, very well drained substrate in a sunny spot. During their growing period in winter carfully water plants and keep them at a minimum of some 10°C. VIII-IX.
