Skunk Cabbage is a small genus which consists of only two species with a disjunctional distribution in North America and Northeastern Asia. They are ideal bog plants with huge leaves and very showy spathes from large perennial rhizomes. For any moist, peaty or humus rich soil, e.g. at the edge of ponds in partial shade to full sun. Very robust and easily grown, highly ornamental plants, fully hardy in the northern hemisphere. They will eventually naturalize by self-seeding in a suited spot. Both species make very attractive plants, and are still rather uncommon outside North America.
On receipt immediately sow seeds flat in any humus-rich soil, keep sowings always very moist and pots in a protected, sunny spot outside during winter. Seedings require a prolonged cooling period for several months before they will start to germinate with rising temperatures in spring. Transplant in summer or following spring as soon as seedlings are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.

Lysichiton camtschatcense (Camtschatka White Skunk Cabbage)
40 (70)cm, Camtschatka White Skunk Cabbage is the rarer counterpart species to Lysichiton americanus and is native of north-eastern Asia (Russia). It makes in early spring pure white, almost scentless spathes and deep green leaves. Easily grown in any humus rich, always moist soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Excellent plant for the border of a pond or a watercourse. III-IV.
