Desert Peas usually are sprawling semiperennial to perennial semi-woody sub shrubs from arid areas in Australia and South Africa. Several species have ornamental, bright colored flowers, of which Swainsona formosa (syn. Clianthus formosus) from Central Australia probably has the most beautiful of all, not only for its unusual large size, but for its bright scarlet color with a contrasting central black blotch. Suitable for any rich, very well drained, preferably rocky soil in full sun throughout the year. In winter reduce watering to a minimum and keep plants at a minimum of some 15°C.
Sow flat in any rich, very well drained, rather inorganic soil at a rather high temperature of some 25°C. Keep pots in full sun, so that seedlings develop vigorously. Germination in this genus is erratic may take several weeks to months.
