Lavender are evergreen, perennial and sometimes woody flowering shrubs, grown for their aromatic foliage and beautiful flower heads. Most make an effective, low hedge. Trim hedge in spring to maintain compact habit. Fully hardy in a sunny position in any well drained, rather rocky or sandy soil.
Sow seeds flat from autumn to summer on any well drained, rather sandy soil. Keep pots sunny and shelter from excessive rain in winter, transplant seedlings in late spring.

20 (40)cm, in this subspecies the typical and most ornamental prominent violet-purple bracts are even larger, and crowning the flower spikes. Native to rocky, sun exposed spots in central Spain and mountains of north-eastern Portugal. As the species mentioned above it is sufficiently hardy in any rocky, well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun or under cold glass in an unheated greenhouse or wintergarden. Lavandula stoechas ssp. stoechas (French Lavender)
20 (40)cm, French Lavender is a beautiful reminder of your last Mediterranean holiday. It is a dwarf, woord, very aromatic shrub, which has been naturalized on the Canaries as well. Makes narrow, grayish leaves and dense spikes of dark purple, tubular flowers in summer. A particularly attractive feature of this plant are the prominent violet-purple bracts on top of each flower spike. Hardy in any rocky, well drained soil in a protected, sunny spot or under cold glass. USDA Climate Zone 8. VII-VIII.
