Tropaeolum or Nasturtium is an American genus with several short perennials to climbing annuals. Seeds offered are from a Chilean, montane perennial with short stems with beautiful glaucous leaves and a dense terminal umbel with numerous bright yellowish-orange flowers. This species is summer growing and winter dormant with a perennial, bulbous rootstock. It requires a very well drained, humus rich and rocky soil in full sun in a protected spot. In colder regions cover dormant plants with a thick mulch layer in winter to protect from freezing through. Alternatively grow in pots under cold glass or a cool wintergarden under frostfree conditions throughout the year.
Sow the large round seeds flat in any rich, well drained, sandy soil in autumn (under frostfree glass in a sunny spot) or in pots outside in mid spring. Young plants should be grown under frostfree conditions for two years, keep pots during dormancy rather dry and cool at some 5°C. Transplant in late spring.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7/8.
7 large seeds per package.
