Canary Shrub Mallows and Mediterranean Shrub Mallows are excellent pot plants for any well drained, slightly humus rich to inorganic, rocky soil in a sunny spot. Reduce watering to a minimum in winter, keep at a minimum of some 10°C. Both Canary species are highly ornamental, robust and easy going plants, yet slow growing species.
Sow seeds flat at some 15°C to 20°C throughout the year in any well drained, yet humus rich soil. Keep pots in full sun and soil always slightly moist. Seed from most Lavatera species will germinate within 2 to 6 weeks at room temperature, Lavatera phoenica germinates irregularly over several (up to six) months. Keep seedlings in full sun, especially in winter.

Lavatera acerifolia (Pink Maple-leafed Canary Shrub Mallow)
150 (220)cm, Pink Maple-leafed Canary Shrub Mallow is a perennial maple-leafed species native of all western islands, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote (Lavatera acerifolia var. hariensis), where it locally occurs in sheltered rock crevices in the succulent zone at an altitudinal range of some 200m to 700m. It makes most ornamental, large pale pink flowers with a showy dark purple throat. Plants usually will go semi-dormant in summer and shed most of their leaves. With decreasing temperatures in autumn and winter plants will start new growth. Keep slightly drier and preferably rather cool at a minimum of some 10°C in full sun in winter. An easy going and robust species. V-IX.

Lavatera aff. triloba ssp. agrigentina
90 (130)cm, a rarely cultivated perennial susbpecies within the Lavatera triloba aggregrate. It makes basally branching spikes with short haired greyish-green leaves and an unusual pale yellow flower color for the genus Lavatera. It is native of sunny dryish spots on Sicily (Italy) and possible in Algeria. For any rich, well drained soil in full sun. Plants are supposedly not sufficient winter hardy in Central Europe. In colder climates best grown in pots under frostfree conditions. Keep drier in winter a a minimum of some 5°C. Wild collected seeds which require a further confirmation that these are indeed from this species. VI-VII.

Lavatera arborea (Lavatère arborescente)
180 (300)cm, Mediterranean Tree Mallow is a showy biannual to perennial woody, branching shrub with erect stems covered with numerous large, intense dark lilac, glossy flowers with purplish central stripes above dark green maple-like foliage. Native of the Mediterranean growing in open spots in coastal areas. For any rich, well drained soil in sull sun throughout the year. Best grown as perennial pot plants, keep drier in winter at a temperature minimum of some 5°C. Seeds from wild collections in Sa Rápita, southern Mallorca, Spain and in the southern Algarve, Portugal.

Lavatera assurgentiflora ssp. assurgentiflora (California Shrub Mallow)
170 (220)cm, California Shrub Mallow is a semi-evergreen shrub with showy, intense dark pink flowers with violet stripes and palmate, mid green to grayish-green leaves on gray stems. Originally only native on the Channel islands offcoast California it is now widespread in the western USA (California region) for its horticultural value and prefers open, sandy to rocky places. This species is not reliably winter hardy and it is best grown under frostfree conditions throughout the year. Excellent pot plant for any rich, well drained substrate. In winter keep cooler at a minimum of some 10°C with reduced watering. VII-IX.

A Mediterranean species from coastal areas which has become rather rare due to the destruction of its habitat for tourist activities and by grazing of savaged goats. 170 (220)cm, Mediterranean Shrub Mallow is an utmost beautiful woody shrub from the western Mediterranean with numerous, quite large, brilliant lilac flowers above ornamental greyish green, smoothly haired leaves. Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Give some good winter protection against freezing through or cultivate in pots in very cold regions. Lavatera punctata (Three Lobed Mallow)
100 (140)cm, Three Lobed Mallow is an elegant annual native from Syria and Palestine, throughout the eastern Mediterranean. Stems are sparsely covered with stellate hairs and spear shaped to trilobed leaves. Lilac-pink flowers are born in a lax inflorescence. Seeds from a collection made in Jadra/Jiyé (10km S of Beyrouth, Lebanon) growing in rocky soils in full sun. Will readily self-sow under good conditions. V-IX.
