Lavatera (Canary and Mediterranean Shrub Mallow)

Canary Shrub Mallows and Mediterranean Shrub Mallows are excellent pot plants for any well drained, slightly humus rich to inorganic, rocky soil in a sunny spot. Reduce watering to a minimum in winter, keep at a minimum of some 10°C. Both Canary species are highly ornamental, robust and easy going plants, yet slow growing species.
Sow at some 20°C throughout the year in any well drained, yet humus rich soil. Seed will germinate within 2 to 4 weeks at room temperature. Keep seedlings in full sun, especially in winter.

150 (220)cm, Pink Maple-leafed Canary Shrub Mallow is a perennial maple-leafed species native of all western islands, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote (Lavatera acerifolia var. hariensis), where it locally occurs in sheltered rock crevices in the succulent zone at an altitudinal range of some 200m to 700m. It makes most ornamental, large pale pink flowers with a showy dark purple throat. Plants usually will go semi-dormant in summer and shed most of their leaves. With decreasing temperatures in autumn and winter plants will start new growth. Keep slightly drier and preferably rather cool at a minimum of some 10°C in full sun in winter. An easy going and robust species. V-IX.

180 (300)cm, Mediterranean Tree Mallow is a showy biannual to perennial woody, branching shrub with erect stems covered with numerous large, intense dark lilac, glossy flowers with purplish central stripes above dark green maple-like foliage. Native of the Mediterranean growing in open spots in coastal areas. For any rich, well drained soil in sull sun throughout the year. Best grown as perennial pot plants, keep drier in winter at a temperature minimum of some 5°C. Seeds from wild collections in Sa Rápita, southern Mallorca, Spain and in the southern Algarve, Portugal.

150 (200)cm, Mediterranean Shrub Mallow is a perennial, woody shrub with acer like, grayish-green foliage and numerous bright pink flowers with lilac veins. A Mediterranean species from coastal areas which has become rather rare due to the destruction of its habitat for tourist activities and by grazing of savaged goats. Easily cultivated in any rich, very well drained soil in a sunny spot throughout the year. In winter keep plants drier at a minimum of some 5°C. V-VIII.

150 (300)cm, Salmon-red Canary Shrub Mallow is a very rare and threatened species with utmost showy large, colorful salmon-orange flowers. It is a woody perennial, branching shrub. Only few specimens in remote populations in the Anaga and Teno region are left in nature for overgrazing by savaged goats. They grow in more or less inaccessible, rocky spots with profound soils in the upper succulent shrub in the northern parts of Tenerife. Plants usually will go semi-dormant in summer when they will shed most of their leaves. At flowering time by the end of summer, adult plants are covered with several flowers at a more or less leaf-less stage. With decreasing temperatures in autumn and winter plants will start new growth. Keep slightly drier and preferably rather cool at a minimum of some 10°C in full sun in winter. A very long lived species. Seeds of this species is very, very scarce as plants in cultivation rarely set seeds, even if they flower in abundance in late summer. VIII-XI.
