Musa (Ornamental Banana)

Ornamental Bananas are native of tropical and subtropical woods throughout Asia. They are vigorous, fast-growing species with tropical, large leaves and long-lasting colorful inflorescences and fruits in several species. The smaller bananas from montane regions in the Himalayas are excellently grown as container plants and some very cold hardy species may be even planted out to the garden in Central Europe (e.g. Musa basjoo and Musa sikkimensis). All are easily grown in any humus-rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot, and a winter minimum of some 15°C with reduced watering. Cold hardy species require a thick insulating winter protection in the garden in a fertile, free-draining, humus-rich soil.
Prior to sowing scarify seed (e.g. carefully scratch the seed coat with fine sandpaper) and soak them in luke warm water for some 48h. Sow in a humus- rich, sandy soil, keep pots only slightly moist at a minimum of some 22°C (optimal 27°C) throughout the year. Germination in this genus is very irregular and may start after some two months, whereas the last seeds may need some six months until the first leaves are developed. All our Musa seeds are harvested from our own grown plants. We do not import any seeds as these are usually not viable anymore.

Musa bauensis

Musa bauensis

5 (7)m, a still rarely known and cultivated, medium tall species from northwestern Borneo (Sarawak, Malaysia) with partly reddish tinged and spotted, rather thin pseudostems and ornamental lush foliage. Under good conditions it will reach flowering size within 2 years after sowing. For us (grown in the open ground in a subtropical climate) it flowered within 14 months. Plants are self-fertile, though only few miniature bananas will be produced. Fruits have a typical banana-smell at maturity but are inedible due to numerous black seeds and few fruit pulp only. Easily grown in any rich soil with sufficient moisture. In winter keep at a minimum of 15°C. VIII-II.
