Sorbus (Servicetree)

Servicetree is a deciduous, tall woody shrub to small tree with broad feathered, dark green leaves. It makes compact terminal umbels with white flowers followed by most ornamental, quite large, apple-like yellowish-red fruis in autumn. The servicetree has long been cultivated in central Europe, but has become increasingly rare. It has been used for its' edible fruits which are used for making jellies and flavoring juices (especially apple juice and cider wine in Germany). Easily cultivated in humus rich, well drained soil in a sunny to partially shaded spot. Very adoptable and robust.
Sow seeds flat in any rich, well drained soil, slightly moist soil. Keep pots in a sunny spot outside during winter. Seeds require a cooling period for several months before they germinate in following spring. After germination keep seedlings slightly drier. Plant out from spring to autumn as soon as young plants are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6, unless not stated differently.
