Sideritis (White Sage)

White Sage or Mountain Tea, locally called Salvia blanca or Chahorra on the Canaries, are in contrast to their more or less annual or biannual counterparts from Central Europe mostly perennial woody sub shrubs with ornamental, densely white or yellowishAll are excellent pot plants for a well drained, preferably rocky soil in always full sun in cultivation. Mediterranean species are used for the preparation of herbal teas and can be grown outside in a sunny and protected spot in the garden.
Sow seeds from non winterhardy species flat throughout the year on any rocky, well drained soil at some 15°C to max. 25°C. Keep seedlings very sunny and always carefully water from beneath. Keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 10°C. Ideal for the cool wintergarden or frostfree greenhouse. Sow seeds from winterhardy species from autumn to mid spring. Keep pots outside in the garden in a protected and sunny place. As soon as seedlings are strong enough transplant to the final spot in the garden.

Sideritis syriaca ssp. syriaca (Syrian Mountain Tea)

30cm, Syrian Mountain Tea is a fully winter hardy perennial with ornamental, densely white covered, aromatic leaves and short branching spikes with pale yellow to white flowers. Dried leaves are traditionally used for herbal teas. It is native of mountains on Crete (ssp. syriaca) and from Turkey and Syria (ssp. nusairiensis). Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a protected spot in full sun. An excellent plant for the rock garden. VI-VII.
