Actinotus (Flannel Flower)

Flannel Flower is a small genus from Australia and New Zealand with some 18 species only. Actinotus are perennials to short evergreen subshrubs with daisy-like flowers. Despite their look-alike flowers, Actinotus belongs to the parsley family (Apiaceae). For any rich, very well drained soil in a sunny spot spot throughout the year. In winter reduce watering to a minimum and keep plants at a minimum of some 15°C.
Sow seeds flat in any very well draining, preferably inorganic substrate (eg. crushed lava, grit sand, etc.). Keep pots in full sun and at some 20°C. Lower night temperatures (down to some 15°C) may enhance the germination process. Germination of seeds from Actinotus helianthi is notoriously difficult and may take several months. Apart from lowering night temperatures, prior to germination seeds may also be soaked in luke warm water with a table spoon of ashes from untreated charcoal added for some 48 h. In habitat Actinotus seeds will usually germinate after some bush fire has removed all competitive plants only, and adding charcoal ashes will imitate natural growing conditions and break down seed dormancy.
