Umbilicus (Navelwort)

Umbilicus or Navelwort is a small genus within the stonecrop family (Crassulaceae) with fresh green, semi-succulent, round leaves with a navel-shaped depression in the center of the leaves. The basal leaf rosette produces a lose spike with elongated, bell-shaped white, rose to fox brown flowers. Usually growing in slightly moist rock walls or rocky soils in open to partially shaded spots throughout Europe. In cultivation any rich, well drained, rather rocky soil is suited. Plant in a protected, sunny spot or grow under cold glass in colder areas. Especially in very hot or very cold climates these are semi-perennials which set seeds and self sow readily.
Sow seeds on top of any rich, well drained, preferably sandy soil. Do not cover the dust like seeds and water from beneath. Place the pot in a rain-protected spot outside from spring onwards. Transplant to the open ground as soon as seedlings are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7.

Umbilicus horizontalis var. erectus

Umbilicus horizontalis var. erectus

25cm, similar to Umbilicus rupestris, yet larger in all parts with less succulent, dark green leaves and a taller spike of cream to light brown trumpet-like flowers. Seeds from a collection made on the island of Sicily, Italy, thus probably not hardy enough to be grown outside in Central Europe, yet a wonderful plant for the cold greenhouse or wintergarden in a partially shaded to sunny spot. V-VI.
