Hovenia (Japanese Raisin Tree)

Japanese Raisin Tree belongs to a small genus of some 7 Asian species of winter hardy, deciduous trees with oval leaves and terminal inflorescences. With maturity of fruits the long peduncles swell and are edible either fresh or dried. They have a delicious taste of raisins with just a little bit of cinnamon. Easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot.
Prior to sowing soak seeds in luke warm water for some 48h. Sow in any well drained, sandy soil throughout the year. Keep pots in full sun and in a protected spot outside during winter. If sowed from summer to autumn seeds will germinate in spring the following year.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
