Lysichiton (Skunk Cabbage)

Skunk Cabbage is a small genus which consists of only two species with a disjunctional distribution in North America and northeastern Asia. Both species are bog plants with huge leaves and very showy spathes, emerging from large perennial rhizomes in spring. For any moist, peaty or humus rich soil, e.g. at the edge of ponds, in partial shade to full sun. Very robust and easily grown plants, fully hardy in the northern hemisphere. Since 2016 the yellow flowering Lysichiton americanus is on the list of invasive species of the European Union, and as such it cannot be offered anymore.
On receipt immediately sow seeds flat in any humus-rich soil, keep sowings always very moist and pots in a protected, sunny spot outside during winter. Sowings require a prolonged cooling period for several months before they will start to germinate with rising temperatures in spring. If seeds are sowed too late, germination will not take place before spring the following year. Transplant in summer or following spring as soon as seedlings are strong enough.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.
