Galinsoga (Guasca)

Guasca is an annual herb from a small genus within the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is native of subtropical South America, yet it is now found widespread all over the world. It has tiny small white flowers and fresh green, slightly aromatic leaves which are used fresh in several local dishes. Leaves are an essential ingredient of a famous Colombian dish, namely Ajiaco Santafereño or Ajiaco Bogotano - a delicious thick soup made with three different potatoe types (papa pastuza, papa sabanera and papa criolla), chicken and maize cobs. Easily grown in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Plants have to be kept under control as they may become easily invasive in tropical as well as in cool temperate regions as seeds are frostresistant.
Sow seeds flat directly in any well drained, humus-rich soil in a sunny site.
