Kniphofia or Hot Poker are similar to Foxtails (Eremurus spp.) and make numerous tubular flowers on showy and ornamental tall flower stalks from a perennial fleshy rootstock. They have nice, grass like foliage in dense rosettes. An excellent South African genus which is easily cultivated in any rich, well drained, dryish to slightly moist soil in full sun. All offered species are sufficiently winter hardy in Central Europe. In very cold regions it is recommended to give basal leaf rosettes a slight winter protection (e.g. some dry mulch layer). Most species will increase well by offsets.
Sow flat in spring after the last freezing nights in any well drained, humus rich, slightly sandy or rocky soil. Keep soil always slightly moist and pots in a sheltered spot in full sun outside. Alternatively sow under glass at a minimum of some 15°C throughout the year. In winter store sowing pots in a preferably frostfree and sunny spot at some 5°C with reduced watering. Transplant seedlings in late spring in their second or third year after sowing depending on growth.
All are USDA Climate Zone 7.
