Catchfly are widespread annuals to herbaceous perennials and can especially be found in the northern hemisphere. Several species have ornamental , bright colored flowers. All Silene species are easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a preferably sunny spot. They are very robust and adopt very well to various soil types.
Sow flat in any rich, well drained soil. Keep pots in a sunny , protected spot outside. Several species require a cooling period of several months prior to germination. If these species are sowed late in the year, they do not germinate before spring in the following year. Transplant perennial species to the final spot in the garden in late summer to autumn.
All are USDA Climate Zone 6.

Silene armeria (Sweet William Catchfly)
15cm, Sweet William Catchfly is a showy annual species with beautiful intense magenta flowers in a terminal inflorescence. It is native of rocky soils in Central Europe. This species is sometimes wrongly offered as Silene elisabethae which is a completely distinct zspecies. Easily cultivated in any rich, well drained soil in a sunny spot. Ideal plant for the rock garden, where it will readily selfsow under appropiate conditions. VI-VII.

Silene colorata (Pink Piroutte)
15cm, Pink Piroutte or Dwarf Pink Star is a biannual to short-lived dwarf perennial from sandy and rocky soils in the vicinity of the sea throughout the Mediterranean. It makes a dense carpet of several bright pink flowers. For any rich, well drained, sandy substrate in a sunny spot throughout the year. If grown as a pot plant keep plants drier at a minimum of some 10°C in winter. ALternatively grow as an annual, sow directly to the ground in mid spring. V-VI.
