Canary and Mediterranean White Sage or Mountain Tea, locally called Salvia blanca or Chahorra on the Canaries, are in contrast to their more or less annual or biannual counterparts from Central Europe mostly perennial woody sub shrubs with ornamental, densely white or yellowish wooly leaves and cylindrical inflorescences. Several species are very rare in nature. All are excellent pot plants for a well drained, preferably rocky soil in always full sun in cultivation. Mediterranean species are used for the preparation of herbal teas and can be grown outside in a sunny and protected spot in the garden.
Sow seeds from non winterhardy Canary Sideritis species flat throughout the year on any rocky, well drained soil at some 15°C to max. 25°C. Keep seedlings very sunny and always carefully water from beneath. Keep drier in winter at a minimum of some 10°C. Ideal for the cool wintergarden or frostfree greenhouse. Sow seeds from Mediterranean species from autumn to mid spring. Keep pots outside in the garden in a protected and sunny place. As soon as seedlings are strong enough transplant to the final spot in the garden.
